When the lift is not running, the unpaved road to the top is open to drive on. However, whenever the lift is in operation, the road belongs to hikers, summer sledding and bicyclists.
Hochwurzen is the starting point and destination for a number of excellent hikes and other activities:
The whole family will enjoy careening down the mountain in these little "convertibles".
For more adventuresome spirits, the Hochwurzen is an ideal place for both paragliders and hanggliders to take off and sail away above one of the most impressive natural landscapes in the world.
One of the great hikes around Hochwurzen leads to Roßfeld with the option of continuing to the Guschen. The path leading up to Roßfeld is an outdoor educational trail [in German].
There are numerous mountains along the Alpine Path Giglach waiting to be climbed: Schiedeck, Hochfeld, Guschen, Roßfeld - all highlights of this trail which leads you through the heart of the Tauern range.
This slight climb along a well-marked path takes you to idyllic chalets and beautiful forests finally ending on top of Hochwurzen.
Suggested Route: Beginning at the Hochwurzen station, a short descent to the parking lot and from here an easy climb to the "Kleine Wurzen" followed by a short descent along alpine meadows to the Hüttecksattel continuing on the right on a wide path that loops around to the beginning of the hike.
There are two steep paths that lead up to the top of Hochwurzen on the westward and southern side of the mountain.
